In September 2009, Victor Neumann and Armin Heinen have convened an international conference in Timişoara, dedicated to the study of Romaniahistory through concepts. The first of its kind, the conference enjoyed a wide and positive press coverage, ranging from mainstream media to academic journals. Based on the proceedings, Neumann and Heinen have edited a collective volume (Istoria României prin concepte. Perspective alternative asupra limbajelor social-politice,Iaşi: Polirom, 2010, 527 pp.), now a landmark in Romanian studies, abundantly reviewed, soon to be published in English with CEU Press.
Building upon this successful experience, in order to establish stronger links with the relevant international field, and further integrate the study of conceptual history with empirical research in historical studies and in the neighboring disciplines, a follow-up conference is planned. This time, the area under scrutiny is Central andEastern Europe, seen in all its internal complexity, as well as in a wider comparative context.
The conference will examine key concepts such as:
- National-subnational-transnational;
- Ethnicity, nationality, minorities (ethnic, linguistic, confessional etc.);
- Historical region-regional-transregional;
- Multiculturality-transculturality-border cultures.
